A story was told that Satan and his cohorts planned to stage a coup d'etat in heaven. He transformed his image into that of Jesus; the devils into the appearance of angels. They imitated the 'mantra' to open heaven's gate: "Let him enter the King of Glory." When the gate-keeper said: 'who is the King of Glory'? Satan raised his hand and loudly shouted: I AM! The heaven's gate did not open. The gatekeeper easily recognized he was not the Christ. Why? His hands did not bear the wounds of the crucifixion! (*retold freely from 'A World of Stories')

Satan is a fake. He takes on many forms that are attractive to our basic instincts. Satan wants to derail God's plan using our myopic mindset. (Kaya mahirap ang makitid ang isip: it serves as the devil's workplace). The gospel portrays the victory of Jesus over Satan. (*Heb., Satan; Gk., Diabolos; Eng., Evil One, which means Adversary)

Archbishop Lagdameo, in one of the spiritual retreats, said that the 'essence of the demonic is the outpouring of the diabolical spirit in imitation of the Pentecost.' Satan subtly uses his scheme of deceit to worm his way into our mind, our choices, our decisions and ultimately, our way of life. The battlefield is the mind. "You are THINKING not as God does, but as human beings do." There are three '-isms' of our time that influence our way of thinking and acting.

1. Hedonism - pleasure is the reality principle of our life. 'Only that which is pleasurable is real.' Commercial ads feed our mind with an ideology that abhors the value of sacrifice.

2. Secularism - the world is understood in terms of itself, and no longer in terms of God. One poster has it expressed, 'If it is to be, it is up to me.' Life (Success) is a personal project; no room is left for God.

3. Capitalism - in its extreme form, is called by Pope Francis, the modern idolatry of money. Money rules supreme. It gives rise to a utilitarian culture in which everything has a tag price. It sacrifices human being's dignity at the altar of money. But always bear in mind that money is a "universal passport everywhere except heaven and a universal provider of everything except happiness."

The spirit of the world invades every sphere of modern life. It creates a mindset that is contrary to the spirit of the gospel.

St. Paul reminds us: "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your MIND so that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect." (Rom 12:1-2).
